Nine Nashville singer/musicians are in the mix, including Richland native Kaleb Jones, 25, who went south to pursue a business degree at Belmont University and stayed on. He has a band, The Young International (think The Killers or Coldplay), and had watched “The Sing-Off” last season because a friend, Jeremy Lister, was in Street Corner Symphony, the show’s runner-up.

“They did really well on the show, so [Mr. Lister] decided to put a group together, his favorite artists in town,” Mr. Jones said. “We are a collective of solo artists.”

At stake is $100,000 and a recording contract with Sony Music.

Blending nine distinct voices into what has become “a really warm, Southern, soulful sound” was not easy, he said. “We had to kind of learn on the fly.”

The program provides musical coaching, which he credits, and The Collective’s styling was done by former “Project Runway” designer Kara Saun.

“She did a really good job, aside from purple not being my favorite color,” he said, laughing — the group’s NBC promo shots show them dressed in various shades. “But the clothes were really nice. A lot of times it felt like we were just wearing fancier versions of
Mr. Jones was more into baseball than music in his younger days, even though his parents, Tom and Wendy Jones, are musicians: “They led the worship at our church, so I grew up with music in the house all the time.”what we usually wear.”

A torn rotator cuff during his junior year at Pine-Richland High School cut short his baseball aspirations, but he discovered he was passionate about guitar.

Unlike previous seasons that aired over the course of one and two weeks, season 3 of “The Sing-Off” has more groups and is scheduled to conclude just after Thanksgiving. For Mr. Jones and The Collective, trying out was sort of a spur-of-the-moment idea, but he said he’s enjoying the ride.

“I have had a blast, and I’m proud of everything we’re doing. But you never know how they’re going to put it on TV,” he said. “I’m excited to share it with the world.”

NBC’s hit a cappella talent-show series The Sing-Off has announced the 16 groups that will compete in its third season. Hosted by Nick Lachey, the series will premiere on Sept. 19 with returning judges Ben Folds and Shawn Stockman alongside singer Sara Bareilles, replacing Nicole Scherzinger (who’s now a judge on Fox’s The X Factor).

The Young International’s own, Kaleb Jones, will be representing Nashville with eight other singer-songwriters. The Collective was formed by season two contestant, Jeremy Lister (Street Corner Symphony).

In conjunction with the show, The Young International will be performing live on Nashville’s Tennessee Mornings show. The morning show airs this Friday (May 20) on Fox 17 and the band will perform at 8:30am.

We spent four days in the cabin, two of which were dedicated to writing and the other two to recording the songs we came up with. In the end, we finished three brand new songs and we couldn’t be more excited. The recordings still need some finishing touches but we hope to have them available in the near future.
